Discovery Communications: Take Sarah Palin's Alaska Off the Air
Why this petition matters
Update 01/09/11: Tonight will be the last episode of "Sarah Palin's Alaska." While it's unclear exactly why the show is being taken off the air, the outcry over the show's glorification of hunting and questionable wildlife practices was heard by the station and the media. Thanks to everyone who contacted Discovery Communications!
Ever since Sarah Palin's reality show was announced by Discovery Communications, wildlife advocates have been protesting it due to her history as an enemy of wildlife.
Despite receiving over half a million letters opposing the show, Discovery went ahead with airing it on TLC ... and, unsurprisingly, Palin's actions on the show have already infuriated wildlife groups.
In the first episode, the Palins are seen fishing in close proximity to brown bears. Alaska Wildlife Alliance says she's clearly violating wildlife guidelines that require fishing boats to stay at least 30 feet away from the protected animals. The group calls it "clearly irresponsible," saying that "She is encouraging the violation of important guidelines that allows tourism to flourish in Alaska. She is inviting future problems with the tourism industry and, in particular, the bear-viewing industry."
Even Joe Meehan from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game said it "may not send an appropriate message to large numbers of people that are not experienced at fishing in bear country."
In the second episode, Palin clubs a halibut to death and then holds up its still-beating heart for the camera. In Defense of Animals has called it a "snuff video,"saying, "Most disturbing is the way she seems to enjoy causing suffering to other beings."
Sarah Palin has once again proven that she has a complete disregard for wildlife, and the company which also boasts the Discovery Channel, Planet Green and Animal Planet networks should not be condoning her irresponsibility.
Tell Discovery Communications to stop supporting Sarah Palin and her war on wildlife.
