Jay Leno and Chris Rock Think Dog Fighting Is Funny

Published October 26, 2009 @ 10:27AM PT

There are actually two other pit bull-related posts coming up on this blog this week, but I feel like this needs to be acknowledged on its own.

Doris of About.com just wrote about Chris Rock losing his chance to play the late Richard Pryor (who was an animal advocate) in an upcoming movie -- and simultaneously losing Pryor's wife's respect -- because of flippant remarks he made on The Jay Leno Show late last month about Vick and the dogs he tortured and killed. I didn't know about the incident until Doris's post today, but BAD RAP covered it on October 3, just days after the show aired. And Jay Leno was just as flippant and dismissive of the animals' suffering. The men were discussing how outrageous it is that so many people think Roman Polanski deserves a free pass on rape (and absolutely ridiculous it is) when Leno brought up Vick, to imply that his crime was minor in comparison and resulted in too much punishment:

Jay Leno: It's amazing to me -- you mistreat a dog, and you lose your career, and you go to jail for two years.

Chris Rock: Yeah, look at Michael Vick! What the hell did Michael Vick do, man? A dog? A pit bull ain't even a real dog.

So Leno thinks that the torture, maiming, traumatizing, and killing -- in often the most horrendous of ways -- of hundreds of innocent beings is mere "mistreatment" and that Vick's so-called punishment was over-the-top. And Rock thinks that what Vick did really wasn't that bad because pit bulls apparently aren't worthy of compassion. I was indifferent to Chris Rock already. I disliked Jay Leno already. Now I have good reason to dislike them both.

Read more from Doris and from BAD RAP.

Looking into Big Red's eyes makes my heart feel softer than Downy! I have to believe that the hard-hearted remarks made by Rock and Leno were made from extreme ignorance rather than malice aforethought. I wish there were a way they could each experience the loyal love of a pitbull, because then they couldn't help but be reviled by the torture of those precious creatures.

Someone ought to share their blogs (I'd volunteer mine about Vick and the atrocities that were committed there) with Chris and Jay - my first response to reading this was they could not have known what really transpired there to be that flippant on public television.  I intend to follow up on seeing that the information does get to Leno and will hope to see it addressed on the show soon ... at least an apology.  Unbelievable that it even happened.

How is a pit bull 'not a real dog'...? This is one reason why I've never liked Chris Rock and Jay Leno; they're heartless.

UGH. Having just celebrated Pit Bull Awareness Day with several rescue groups and shelters here in Baltimore, this makes me so sick. To think I used to find Chris Rock funny. Sadly, I'm not surprised, either.

i think this is absolutely disgusting a dog is a living thing and should be treated right not mistreated. I resuced a diog from a shelther t hat was used in dog fights and giving him a good home mad me feel awesome and i love him to death. So who ever thinks dog fighting is a joke it really isnt a joke at all it is a very serious matter that is on the rise daily. So if you see something fishy dealing with dogs and it seems like they are fighting them report it and do the  right thing. thank you=]

If anyone has seen the sadness in the eyes of a pitbull that has been used for fighting and practice of fighting, they would not joke. I have one that escaped from a dog fighting ring from somewhere here in my area. I would love to have these guys forced bred and then put in the pit to become fodder for enjoyment forthe sickest minds in the world. It took me a week to just get this guy to come close to my house. He would sit in the woods and shake when I approached him with a bowl of food and water. Finally, with much patience, he got a little bit closer until he reached out to smell my hand. Another few weeks and he would get close to the back door and now...we are joined at the hip. He has become one of my best friends along with the half huskey/pitbull that I rescued from being put to sleep by a neighbor, and they will not let me out of their sight. He still runs and hides with loud noises or raised voices but I hope I have made his life better. These guys eat better than I do and will have a place in my home and heart for ever. A bad dog mirrors it's owner..not it's self. Hey, Jay and whatshisface..count me as a non fan.

" I HOLD THAT THE MORE HELPLESS A CREATURE, THE MORE ENTITLED IT IS TO PROTECTION BY MAN FROM THE CRUELTY OF MAN "  And that's the way it should be for all living animals out there every where in this world. A life is a life ,weather it be a animal or human. We need more lovers on this earth, not KILLERS. If we people, were animals we would want to be treated kindly and with compassion not tortured, mutilated and taught to attack one another. These dogs are born in this world not knowing any thing about killing, or about hatred like humans do. We are the reason for the horrifying acts that pit bulls are being crucified for, not because it's in their blood. But it's what they have been  trained to do when they have IGNORANT OWNERS. THEY DON"T HAVE TO BE KILLER DOGS BECAUSE THEIR PIT BULLS!!! ALL DOGS ARE AND CAN BE LOVING FAMILY COMPANIONS. All of us people who care about dogs any kind of dogs should have our eyes open at all times for dogs that are out there in back yards and on chains left to be alone just waiting for their owner to love and care for them. WE CAN STOP THIS KIND OF ACT ON ALL DOGS NOW IF YOU USE YOUR VOICE.... AND SPEAKE UP FOR THE ANIMALS YOU SEE BEING TREATED BADLY, LEFT OUT IN THE RAIN OR SNOW WITH OUT SHELTER, NOT BEING FEED OR HAVING FRESH WATER EVERY DAY AND OR NEVER EVER HAVING ANY ONE TO PLAY WITH THEM AND HUG AND KISS THEM, TO FEEL REAL LOVE FROM A HUMAN. THEY ALL DESERVE THIS. YES EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM THAT'S ON THIS EARTH NOW. AND THE ONES THAT ARE TO COME,THAT ARE BEING BORN TODAY, TOMORROW AND IN THE FUTURE .PLEASE.... all the animal lovers out there keep a close eye on the dogs and cats and all other innocent animals around your neighbor hoods and lets keep them all safe from those who would do them any harm or those who neglect their pets. PETS that's what they are. FAMILY MEMBERS NOT TRASH OR GARBAGE !!!   DON'T HAVE ANIMALS IF YOU DON'T LOVE THEM.  AND IF YOU LOVE THEM LIKE I LOVE MINE... YOU ARE WORTHY AND VALUED AND DESERVING OF ANY PET YOU OWN.  LETS SAVE ALL INNOCENT, HELPLESS ANIMALS FROM MANS CRUELTY P.L.E.A.S.E....  " SHAME ON YOU JAY LENO AND CHIS ROCK "

That is sad.  I just lost a lot of my respect for Chris Rock.

I can tell you, pit bulls are real dogs, perhaps more worthy of love and effection because of how easily teir breed is mistreated.

My sister in law has a pit bull, and he is one of the coolest, happiest dogs I've known.

My grandmother had a part pit bull (other part was lab).  She was the nicest, calmest dog I've ever known.

There was a massive letter writing campaign to the network about the comments the day after they were made.  Not one single person received even an acknowledgement from the network, including me.  I was thrilled when Mrs. Pryor wrote her blistering response to Chris Rock.  It was classic and spot on.  It's a shame the network can't just own up to the absolute low that Leno hit when he joined in on this with Chris Rock.  They both should be ashamed.  It's that kind of attitude that perpetuates this cancer known as BSL.

I have just written the network as well. I will continue to write everyday, until they respond and I believe all of you should do the same. I have also banned the network from our viewing!!!People like this send the message the it is no big deal to torture and kill animals. This is part of our problem in our society. Along with Glenn Beck who also commented about the Baltimore elementary school eliminating meat on Mondays (meatless Mondays) and growing there own garden for better health! What could be better then children becoming more health concious? I don't understand these people and their thinking but I am glad to know that there are still those who care about animals, health and our lack of morals in our society!!!!!!

Leno's and Rock's comments were thoughtless. What is funny about animals being fought to death or someone running from the law and a rape conviction? However, and sadly too, these are the kinds of things that come from most who are involved in show business. Leno makes a living from getting laughs and he will resort to the cheapest shots to get them. Rock is no different. The suffering of others is good material, no matter what the circumstances are. NBC has turned into a ultra-liberal outfit and has lost all credibility in my opinion. Perhaps Mr. Leno and Mr. Rock would benefit from spending a few days volunteering at a pet rescue. There they would see first hand the animals who have been victims of dog fighting and other human perpetuated cruelty. Then, they could volunteer at a woman's shelter (if the shelter wanted them. That could be iffy), and talk to victims of rape and domestic abuse. Perhaps then they might come away with a new attitude towards what is funny and what most definitely isn't.

I wrote NBC several days ago about this subject and told them I was not only going to stop watching the Jay Leno show (which is, IMHO, 'lame' anyway) because of his and Chris Rock's comments, but was also going to boycott their sponsors as well, much as I have done for any sponsors of the NFL.  I have lost all respect for either of those individuals.  Shame on them!  And as for Pit Bulls not being real dogs?  In my way of thinking, Jay Leno and Chris Rock are not real men.  Real men neither engage in such cruel, inhumane acts nor condone them in my way of thinking.

Yet they are just lowly, base, spoiled, pathetic and ugly, harmful men of the human race which is ruining our moral tissue in society with grotesque comments for a cheap and bitter guffaw. Well, blow me down.

I've never been a fan of Leno, but thought Chris Rock was funny.  Not now.  There is NOTHING funny about dog fighting! For these two to make light of dog fighting is a new low.

By the way Leno, Vick didn't lose his career, he is once again playing in the NFL, making millions, despite the fact that he has never apologized for the torture and killing of countless innocent dogs.

Chris Rock: Pit Bulls are REAL dogs, and they deserve all the love and respect we can give them.

Chris Rock and Jay Leno are ignorant. They just need to see dog fighting..really see the blood and the suffering and the fierce determination of a dog that will fight despite his torn body to please his abusive owners. People, normal people with a healthy level of compassion and humanity, will understand that Vick's sentence was too small for the crime he comitted especially if they've seen the horrors of dog fighting for themselves. I grew up in a bad setting and every street in my neighborhood had at least 3-5 pit bulls living there.  I remember the first time I saw a fighting dog. I was 5 years old and he was a big scar-covered rednose mastiff/pit bull mix with his face and scalp dangling from his skull and the loneliest eyes I've ever seen on a dog.  I have these images in my mind and then when ignorant fools make comments like this it's hard for me to believe unless I remind myself that they haven't seen the blood first hand. They need to know what exactly it is theyre talking about when they say " a pit bull aint even a real dog"

I watch the National Geographic channel's show "DogTown".One episode represented the issue of "Vick's" pitbulls and their rescue of them. Of the dogs on the show, they were all beautiful frightened dogs. I have never been a fan of pitbulls mainly because of their so called "reputation". After watching this DogTown episode, I have totally been converted. I would gladly own a pitbull any day. On this show, one of the dogs was a female named Georgia. She had been forcibly bred using a "breading rack". Her teeth had all been removed by a vet !!...scary...so she couldn't bite at the males who were mounting her. Previously she had been used as a fighter, because there were scars all over her face. The trainer at "Dogtown" who took her under his wing, did a remarkable job of trying to rehabilitate her. She had to be kept away from other dogs, because all she had known was to fight them. But she loved people ! After all that had been done to her, she still loved people. She responded to her trainer with love and affection, he was able to train her to do tricks, come when called etc. etc. And yet, it was a human who totally abused her from day one. She was an amazing dog. Out of the other pitbulls who were rescued, most were adopted to homes and are doing well. Imagine, after all they had been through, to actually go to a home and receive "love".  If any of you out there get a chance to watch that show, it will melt your heart. I also watch the "Dog Whisperer" any chance I get, and his famous sidekick "Daddy" who is a pure bred pitbull, and I just love him. He is the most laid back gentle dog I have ever seen. I would take him home in a minute.   So to anyone who thinks pitbulls are "not a dog", should be ashamed. I am seriously thinking my next dog just may be a pitbull.  To Jay Leno and Chris Rock, you disgust me.
