Tell Breast Cancer Charities to Use Innovative, Humane, Non-animal Research Methods
Decades after the "war on cancer" was launched, we still have no cure for breast cancer. And the billions of dollars spent on cruel and ineffective animal research have not identified the causes of breast cancer or a treatment.
The use of animals for breast cancer research is suboptimal due to animals' significant genetic, cellular, and physiological differences from humans. Animals suffer and die as a result of experiments and the misleading results can pose real risks to human health.
Fortunately, some researchers and charities are leading the way toward more ethical and effective, human-centered research.
Humane, nonanimal research being conducted by compassionate organizations such as the Avon Foundation, the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, and their vital joint project, the Army of Women, focus on how breast cancer starts in women's bodies and on identifying ways to combat the genetic and environmental factors that increase the risk of developing breast cancer.
But some health charities continue to fund cruel animal experiments.
Please tell them you want scientifically-sound and humane research that will stop breast cancer before it starts.
Send a single e-mail that will go to executives at all the charities listed below:

Subject: Your concern regarding Susan G. Komen for the Cure research funding
Date: 19 октября 2009 г. 0:18
Thank you for reaching out to Susan G. Komen for the Cure and inquiring about
the use of animals in research. We respect your viewpoint on this issue and
hope that the following information addresses your questions.
While Susan G. Komen for the Cure does not conduct research, it does fund
innovative and responsive research projects in leading institutions
worldwide. Komen for the Cure has a long history of funding groundbreaking
research to fulfill its promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever.
Komen funds scientific research as well as community breast health education
and outreach programs across the country through our 122 Affiliates in the
U.S. Our research portfolio addresses areas such as prevention, survivorship,
cancer cell biology, and cancer etiology.
Komen has strict controls to maintain the integrity of the grant application
and review process. Komen's Grant Program adheres to a peer-review process
that is recognized by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). All research
funded by Komen's Grant Program is developed and conducted under the
direction of the primary investigator who is applying for the grant.
The federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires that any new
pharmaceutical compound be tested on at least two different animal models to
be considered for approval for use in humans. Therefore, some investigators
must conduct animal testing in order to comply with FDA regulations for drug
development. In order to be eligible for Komen research grant funding,
investigators must provide proof of pre-approval of study design and animal
care methods from the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) at
the institution where they will be conducting research. In accordance with
U.S. federal law, the IACUC may permit some investigators to use laboratory
animals, usually genetically bred mice, in their search to identify more
effective ways to prevent and treat breast cancer. Researchers are also
required to file an Investigator Assurance Statement to ensure all procedures
are in compliance with National Institute of Health and (NIH) and U.S.
Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulations.
We hope this answers your questions. We respect your viewpoint on this issue
and thank you for sharing your concerns.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Thompson, Vice President, Health Sciences

this is a strange feeling when u r proven wrong yet it makes u much more happier than the feeling of being proven the right one. so u were right and i was wrong and u have won but so did i. sometimes the real win comes from the defeat itself and that win is much more sweeter than before. pls make more people like me to bow down before u, and trust me i dont do that often! rock on . . .

I signed this just because u have asked me to do so and cause i trust your judgment, but, i was curious in knowing what do u mean by "Innovative, Humane, Non-animal Research Methods" what r the alt methods? no one yet has enlightened it even in the comments, for someone like me who does not know much about the alt methods its hard to understand how can u do a research of such magnitude without even trying it once on any other living creature? if they don't do that then r u trying to say that it may someday come to the market without any live test? so which human should i pick to be the first guinea big, or in other words which one of us r expendable to save the life of other species? i just hope that i am wrong in this and there r alt methods as u had mentioned; i will be very happy if u can post an update on this mentioning the alternative methods. till then, keep rocking and smile as u always do

Does anyone from those orgs ever read the mail we send them? They completely ignore the fact that their research on animals is worthless to humans, whether they feel it is inhumane or not, they are stealing money from people but not finding a cure for people. The Koemen foundation has sent out that typical response and my blood is boiling, I hope my response back scalded them.
Posting this article elsewhere, we need more action against the abuse. ty Manuela
